Wiarton Willie is at it again. On February 2 2011, Canada’s most celebrated prognosticating groundhog will emerge from hiding to be the guest of honour at this year’s 55th annual Wiarton Willie Festival, offering his yearly predictions for an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter.
Steeped in folklore, Wiarton Willie’s prognostication abilities are legendary and prediction day has grown from a humble small town event into a week long celebration that captures the attention of Canadian and international visitors. 2011 Groundhog Day festivities will be attended by thousands of spectators, local politicians and media from coast-to-coast. Arriving in Wiarton Bruce County on February 1st is Canadian comedian and satirist Rick Mercer who along with the public will wait with baited breath for Willie’s weather report.
New to this year’s festival is the “Willie Big Tent” an 8,000 square foot heated tent providing a great line-up of indoor entertainment. The festival will also feature tributes to Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, as well as 9-time Juno award winners April Wine. In partnership with Yamaha, this year’s Festival also welcomes the return of the 2nd annual “Ride the Willie”, a chance for media and politicians to experience the thrill of snowmobiling, one of Canada’s favourite winter sports, throughout the pure powder of District 9 in the Bruce, bordered by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
The Willie Big Tent will also host Youth Day on Thursday, February 3, offering an all-star line up of events and activities for all ages, including Hanna Montana, Jonas Brothers and Lady Gaga tribute acts. In addition, the Festival welcomes country music star Jamie Warren and rock act Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols who have recently returned from touring with KISS.
