World's Largest Yom Kippur ‘Kol Nidre’ Service to break world record
Los Angeles, California, (PRWEB) September 27, 2017 -- Some 100,000 worshippers --- making up the largest congregation of its kind --- will come together September 29th at 6:00 pm for a Yom Kippur service led by Rabbi Naomi Levy of Nashuva.
The service, which will be broadcast worldwide, will take place at the Founders Church of Religious Science in Los Angeles and will be streamed (and later archived) at jewishjournal.com. Viewers will be able to follow the service in a downloadable prayer book, and connect via commenting with fellow “congregants” around the world.
Kol Nidre is the evening service of Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, will fast and/or will attend services on this day.
Levy's services combine charismatic preaching, traditional prayer and meditation, along with a heavy infusion of musical styles, from reggae to klezmer to Gospel, performed by a multi-cultural band. Levy has heard from thousands of people of all faiths via Facebook commenting and email moved and changed by the experience.
Last year nearly 80,000 viewers tuned in creating a virtual "congregation" stretching from South America to Rjekavik to Iran. This year, they are confident that 100,000 worshippers is within reach.
Levy, a rabbi and best-selling author, whose latest book is Einstein and the Rabbi: Searching for the Soul, was ordained in the first class of women at Jewish Theological Seminary. She founded and leads Nashuva, Hebrew for, "We Will Return." Nashuva is a post-denominational, non-membership community open to all that meshes spirituality with social action.
