Our work with World T.E.A.M. Sports is especially gratifying as the veterans with disabilities that participate in these sporting events exemplify what can be accomplished with great determination while providing inspiration to all involved.
Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) March 14, 2013
Recognizing the ongoing success of World T.E.A.M. Sports in creating inclusive sporting events for disabled and able-bodied participants, including veterans, the respected Fidelity & Guaranty Life Life Insurance Company has committed to providing sponsorship support for two of the non-profit’s annual events.
The Maryland-based life insurance and annuity company will field a competitive team in this May’s Adventure TEAM Challenge from World T.E.A.M. Sports. Held in the scenic McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area west of Grand Junction, Colorado, the Adventure TEAM Challenge has been called one of the world’s most demanding adventure races. Each team of five athletes includes two persons with disabilities, one being a wheelchair user. In past events, paraplegic and quadriplegic athletes have participated in the Challenge, with stages including mountain biking, river rafting, climbing and rappelling.
Fidelity & Guaranty Life will also provide sponsorship support for the organization’s April 26-28 Face of America ride from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia to the historic battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The annual bicycle ride honoring the commitment and sacrifices of veterans and first-responders includes 500 participants, including 100 disabled veterans who ride hand cycles, recumbent and standard bicycles on the two-day, 110-mile ride.
Participants of the Face of America ride will include veterans who live with disabilities ranging from loss of limb to blindness to Post Traumatic Stress. Participating veterans served in wars from Afghanistan and Iraq to Vietnam. Active duty military and civilian riders will ride together with the adaptive veterans along Maryland’s scenic back roads and byways, ending at a celebration in Gettysburg April 28 that will include friends, family and area residents. Originally begun as a cross-country team ride in 2000, in 2002 and 2003, the Face of America served as the official post-9/11 commemorative ride from Ground Zero in New York to the Pentagon. It assumed its current route in 2007.
“World T.E.A.M. Sports welcomes the support of Fidelity & Guaranty Life Insurance,” said Van Brinson, World T.E.A.M. Sports Chief Operations Officer. “It is through sponsors such as this who truly understand our mission and share a deep commitment to supporting people with disabilities, in particular our injured veteran population that this organization continues to grow. We look forward to working with Fidelity & Guaranty Life, and growing that relationship in the coming years.”
John Phelps, Senior Vice President and Chief Distribution Officer Fidelity & Guaranty Life, is enthusiastic about the company’s sponsorship. “We support nearly 50 charitable organizations in our local community and across the U.S.,” he said. “Our work with World T.E.A.M. Sports is especially gratifying as the veterans with disabilities that participate in these sporting events exemplify what can be accomplished with great determination while providing inspiration to all involved.”

World T.E.A.M. Sports is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered in North Carolina and headquartered in Holbrook, New York. Celebrating 20 years in 2013, World T.E.A.M. Sports has organized athletic events for disabled and able bodied citizens – mountain climbing, white water rafting, biking, and more. Four things always happen at our events: (1) Disabled participants build self-confidence and physical fitness; (2) The disabled provide a role model for other disabled citizens, encouraging them to take up physical activities; (3) The disabled become a moving inspiration to other participants and to spectators when they see that disabled individuals can meet challenges beyond anyone’s imagination; and (4) The disabled and able-bodied participants learn to work as a team to overcome those challenges. World T.E.A.M. Sports changes lives through sports.
