Xarelto Lawsuit Allegations
Xarelto was approved for sale in the U.S. in 2011, and is now indicated to prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation; as a treatment for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.* Court documents indicate that more than 30 product liability claims have been filed in U.S. courts against the drug’s manufacturers, all of which allege Xarelto caused patients to suffer serious and life-threatening complications, including uncontrollable internal bleeding. Like other cases involving the drug, the Xarelto lawsuit filed by Bernstein Liebhard LLP claims that its manufacturers rushed the medication to market, and wrongly positioned it as a superior alternative to warfarin, a blood thinner that has been in use for decades. Among other things, the complaint points out that by June 30, 2012, Xarelto had been implicated in more than 1,000 adverse event reports made to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, including 65 fatalities. Of the Xarelto adverse events that involved internal bleeding, 8% resulted in death, which was approximately twofold the risk of a hemorrhage-related death with warfarin. While no reversal agent has been approved for Xarelto bleeding, hemorrhaging associated with warfarin can be stopped via the administration of vitamin K.
