The Critical Issue of Cyber Security
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) October 09, 2013 -- An epidemic of cyber attacks is occurring every day in cyber space, and the targets are not only your own personal devices, but also the financial industry, transportation and power grids, all levels of government, health care institutions, schools and police departments, to name a few.
On a personal level, getting hacked is annoying and potentially expensive. The 2012 Norton Cybercrime Report (http://us.norton.com/cybercrimereport/) states that every second, 18 people fall victim to cyber crime—more than 1.5 million victims per day. More than 600,000 Facebook accounts are compromised every day. An estimated 556 million victims are attacked every year.
But on a global scale, imagine what would happen if a hacker shut down a city’s power grid, interfered with an implanted medical device, or infiltrated the air traffic control towers. Businesses are also a prime target, according to the Lloyd’s 2013 Risk Index (http://www.lloyds.com/news-and-insight/risk-insight/lloyds-risk-index), which places cyber threats as the third largest risk to global business. Security expert James Ryan, Founder and Owner of Litmus Logic, cites this report in his recent article (http://csbj.com/2013/10/08/three-mindsets-about-cyber-risk-and-which-will-resonate/), published in the Colorado Springs Business Journal, and urges business leaders to choose a new mindset about cyber risk to survive and thrive in the digital economy.
On Feb. 12, 2013, President Obama signed an Executive Order on Cyber Security (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/02/12/executive-order-improving-critical-infrastructure-cybersecurity), intended to protect the country’s infrastructure from cyber threats. He stated that these threats are as critical as other possible attacks, including nuclear attacks, terrorists and weapons of mass destruction. The Executive Order calls on business leaders, government and technical experts to collaborate to address cyber security issues.
Gopal Khanna, Senior Fellow at the Technological Leadership Institute, University of Minnesota and Former CIO of the State of Minnesota, contends that, "Minnesota is poised to become a leader in cyber security issues, boosted by a private sector with a global footprint and an understanding of corporate and international dimensions of cyber security, high tech industry segments, world renowned research university institutions and faculty, an active and engaged IT community and public policy leaders."
On October 22-23, leaders from these sectors will gather at the Minneapolis Convention Center for the third annual Cyber Security Summit.
The Summit’s mission is to establish a multi-stakeholder consortium that brings together industry, government and academic interests in an effort to improve the state of cyber security on both a domestic and international level.
The impressive speaker lineup includes Lieutenant General Harry P. Raduege, Jr. Chairman, Deloitte Center for Cyber Innovation, Deloitte Consulting LLP.
General Raduege served 35 years in the U.S. military, working in the areas of technology, including telecommunications, space, information, and network operations. He served more than 17 years in joint duty assignments and four times as a Federal Chief Information Officer. He led efforts to restore communications to the Pentagon following the September 11th terrorist attacks, upgraded Presidential communications, and led the successful expansion of the department's Global Information Grid. General Raduege also led the prioritization of communications restoration throughout New York City following the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Other notable speakers include Dr. Ron Ross, Fellow, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Marcus Alldrick, Chief Information Security Officer, Lloyd’s of London and Hennepin County Sheriff Richard W. Stanek.
