The Technology Outlook for Norwegian Schools 2013-2018: An NMC Horizon Project Regional Analysis was released as a collaborative effort between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education. This report will inform education leaders about significant developments in technologies supporting primary and secondary education in Norway.

Twelve emerging technologies are identified across three adoption horizons over the next one to five years, as well as key trends and challenges expected to continue over the same period, giving educators and key stakeholders a valuable guide for strategic technology planning for Norwegian schools.

“School leaders in Norway will leverage this report to catalyze discussions around emerging technologies and their potential to effect substantive change,” says Dr. Larry Johnson, CEO of the NMC and co-principal investigator for the project. “Advisory board members saw a clear need to embed digital literacy across the entire Norwegian school system, from training pre-service teachers to developing 21st century assessments for students.”

The Technology Outlook for Norwegian Schools 2013-2018 recognizes BYOD (“Bring Your Own Device), cloud computing, flipped classroom, and social media as technology topics expected to enter mainstream use in the near-term horizon of one year or less. Games and gamification, mobile learning, online learning, and open content are seen in the mid-term horizon of two to three years. Finally, learning analytics, natural user interfaces, real-time machine translation, and wearable technology emerged in the far-term horizon of four to five years.

"This report illuminates the key emerging technologies that educators, administrators, and policymakers need to seriously consider as pathways to enriching teaching and learning in schools across Norway," said Morten Søby, Head of Department of the Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education and co-principal investigator for the project.

All of the subject matter in this report was identified through a qualitative research process designed and conducted by the NMC for the entire NMC Horizon Report series that engages a body of experts in education, technology, business, and other fields around a set of research questions designed to surface significant trends and challenges and to identify emerging technologies with a strong likelihood of adoption in Norwegian primary and secondary education. This report details the areas in which these experts were in strong agreement.

The Technology Outlook for Norwegian Schools 2013-2018 is available online, free of charge, and published under a Creative Commons license to facilitate its widespread use, easy duplication, and broad distribution.
