Local Law Firm Allows Employees to Choose Worthy Charities
Durham, NC (PRWEB) October 01, 2013 -- Earlier this summer, the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin held a bake sale to raise money for their Social Services Committee to distribute amongst charities their employees suggested.
“I’m a cancer survivor and have been a longtime supporter of the Cornucopia House,” said Farrin employee Ellen Easterly. “They really helped my family and me through my journey and, with the downturn of the economy, they’ve really struggled with decreased donations. It meant so much to me that the Firm came together to help support them at my suggestion.”
Cornucopia House was one of five charities chosen for the event. The others were World Relief, The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Lincoln Community Health Center and The Lupus Foundation of America. According to organizer Jennifer Duffy, the firm is increasing their focus on health and wellness this year, so the Social Services Committee sought nominations to organizations devoted to health issues.
At the bake sale, employees set up “information stations” with poster boards and pamphlets about their chosen charity organizations.
“We were absolutely overflowing with baked goods,” Duffy said. “We had to extend the sale an extra day and even then we had goodies left over. It was really wonderful to see how many employees supported one another and the charities they cared about. Overall we raised over $1000 to donate – I think it was a huge success.”
Duffy was not alone in her sentiments. According to Law Offices of James Scott Farrin Shareholder and Social Services Committee Chair attorney Tara Williams, the Committee thought the bake sale was so successful they hope to make it an annual event.
“We’re always looking for opportunities to support local charities and get employees involved in the process,” Williams said. “This event allowed us to focus on health and wellness, which is in keeping with another goal of the Firm, and generated such an outpouring of support, we believe employees have an interest in repeating the event in the future.”
