Farm Credit Sponsors First Ever “Multi-Farmer” Farmers Market on a Military Installation
Westminster, MD (PRWEB) October 01, 2013 -- MidAtlantic Farm Credit partnered with Farm Credit of the Virginias to sponsor a weekly farmers market held at the Defense Health Headquarters (DHHQ), located in Falls Church, Virginia. As part of Operation: Live Well, the military location kicked-off the Healthy Base Initiative (HBI) on Thursday, September 12 with an event that included food vendors, music, fitness activities, and a chef cook-off.
The farmers market was started as a result of the Department of Defense’s Healthy Base Initiative, taking place at 13 military installations across the country, with the DHHQ being one of the first locations to pilot this program. With a goal of promoting healthy living to military members and their families, the Healthy Base Initiative looks to provide easy access to fresh food options and information on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
The first farmers market of the season was held on June 20 at the DHHQ. When the market opened at 12p.m., lines were already forming to purchase the fresh, local products. DHHQ employee, Tanita Daniel, stated, “This is an excellent idea. Whoever came up with this idea was spot-on.”
MidAtlantic Farm Credit CEO, Bob Frazee, expressed his support of the market by saying, “There's so much potential for good things to happen when you get people together. Connecting consumers with the source of their food, and producers with the people who eat what they grow, provides a valuable experience for both.”
The farmers market will be open to DHHQ employees every Thursday from 12-4pm from June through November. For more information about Operation: Live Well and the Healthy Base Initiative, please visit http://www.militaryonesource.mil/olw.
