Cincinnati, Ohio (PRWEB) October 02, 2013 -- As National Fall Awareness Week ends, it is estimated that one third of seniors over the age of 65 and one half over the age of 80 will fall each year. This results in pain and suffering and medical costs exceed $27 billion annually. House Doctors professional handyman services President Jim Hunter says raising awareness of the simple home modifications available could help.
Hunter said,"I remember when my own mum fell. The pain and suffering followed by the emotional decisions that need to be made following the incident. We have to be aware of this issue not just one week but all year. The really annoying thing is that most falls are preventable and carrying out some simple modifications to our homes could certainly help."
In an effort to raise awareness in 2013, communities in 47 states and Washington, DC participated in Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Sept. 22, 2013.
Hunter continued, "With more than a third of falls happening while bathing or showering, and more than 14 percent happening while using a toilet, having grab bars fitted or installing a walk in tub in your bathroom could dramatically lower your risk of falling."
The National Council for Aging seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls. Last week, to highlight fall hazards and increase awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls, was recognized as “Fall Prevention Awareness Week.”
