Johns Hopkins Receives Prestigious ABET Accreditation for Its Part-time Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering
Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) October 02, 2013 -- The Johns Hopkins University’s Engineering for Professionals (EP), a division of the Whiting School of Engineering that administers part-time graduate programs, announced today that its Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) in Systems Engineering has been granted accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
“The Johns Hopkins MSE degree is the nation's largest systems engineering master’s program to receive ABET accreditation, and the first at a civilian university,” said EP’s Systems Engineering Program Chair Ronald R. Luman. “This endorsement speaks to the excellence of our students, the experience of our instructors, and our commitment to continuous improvement.”
“The MSE curriculum emphasizes learning by doing and uses project life cycle to teach best practices and skills needed by today’s engineers,” said Andrew Douglas, interim dean of The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. “Through its highly interactive class sessions, the program orients students with a practical focus on applications and problem solving with the intent to provide immediate useful knowledge.”
The curriculum is designed to give students a strong foundation in systems engineering and to tailor their course of study in several focus areas such as cybersecurity or human systems engineering, as well as technical management. And the educational objectives prepare students to guide the engineering development of modern complex systems and attain programmatic or technical leadership roles in an organization by identifying, formulating, designing, and/or testing practical solutions to engineering problems.
“Instructors are primarily drawn from the staff of Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory, which is one of the nation’s premier defense and space science research facilities, and their experience permeates the program,” said Dexter G. Smith, associate dean of Engineering for Professionals. “Students are therefore well prepared to apply classroom lessons to real-world situations.”
Johns Hopkins’ MSE program addresses the needs of engineers and scientists engaged in all aspects of analysis, design, integration, production, and operation of modern systems. Johns Hopkins instructors are practicing systems engineers who employ lectures and readings on theory and practice with realistic problem scenarios in which students, individually and collaboratively, apply principles, tools, and skills.
Students who are admitted with a transcript from an accredited undergraduate ABET EAC (Engineering Accreditation Commission) program will be awarded a Master of Science in Engineering in Systems Engineering upon completion of the JHU requirements. All other students admitted to the program will pursue the Master of Science in Systems Engineering degree. Students must complete 10 one-semester courses to earn either the MSE or MS in Systems Engineering degree. Students can also pursue one of seven focus areas.
ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as an accreditor of college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. ABET provides accreditation for engineering programs through the EAC, one of its four accreditation commissions.
