Even though this is our third event, I can’t get over how much fun these young children are having and learning spatial reasoning at the same time.

On a breezy, sunny South Florida day, thousands came out to enjoy the fun at a local Girl Scout Camp. Working with the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, OMGStorage.com developed a fun, yet challenging hands-on STEM activity to help foster and develop spatial reasoning skills among young girls.
OMGstorage.com participated in the last and largest of the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida Family events, Saturday, September 28, 2013 with thousands in attendance.
OMGStorage.com’s Box in a Box activity had young and old trying to top the score of the most boxes, some getting frustrated but loving the challenge. Challenging because trying to fit all the different sized boxes using all colors without crossing the red line is not easy. Just ask Cristina a 1st grade Girl Scout Brownie, ”it’s too hard” she said. Little Cristina didn’t give up easily and kept at it until she was able to achieve it. “I did It!” she exclaimed excitedly. Mom, Adriana was very impressed with the activity. She didn’t realize puzzles and activities such as these developed a real skill or were scientific in nature, I never knew that so many jobs such as engineering, architecture, scientist and computer science use these skills” commented Adriana. Spatial reasoning, one of the eight kinds of intelligence, it is a person’s ability to recreate one’s visual experience and reasoning about shape, measurement, depiction and navigation. At a young age, it helps children to visualizing space and its contents. Puzzles games such as the Box in the Box activity helps the children see the size and visualize how many and what size other boxes will fit.
“Even though this is our third event, I can’t get over how much fun these young children are having and learning spatial reasoning at the same time. You really see it in their faces, the thinking and the sense of accomplishment,” commented Tony Prada, COO of OMGStorage.com. “Less than 25% of STEM graduates are women, and we are extremely proud to bring this activity to the Girl Scouts and help girls develop this very important STEM skill, a skill that important to our nation’s future.”
