Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn... with the ever increasing popularity of social media, it will come as no surprise that online identity theft and fraud is on the rise.

A recent survey of mobile device users by Experian revealed that there were 123,589 victims of identity fraud last year in the UK, with an average financial loss per victim of £1,100.

Secure shredding company PHS Datashred knows how important data security is for individuals and for businesses. That’s why it has released a new guide to protecting your identity when using social media sites.

Anthony Pearlgood, Managing Director of PHS Datashred, said: “Most of us are fairly savvy about our offline security; for example, using a secure shredding service to destroy confidential documents and never giving out our bank details over the phone.

“But in 2012, it took people an average of 444 days to discover they had become a victim of online ID fraud. Luckily, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your identity on the internet, particularly when using your social media account.
