Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Home Helpers and Direct Link of Broward and Palm Beach is educating the local community on the symptoms of breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are many symptoms that can indicate possible breast cancer. These include swelling of the breast, skin irritation, pain in the nipple, a lump in the underarm area, and discharge in the nipple, among others.
Every year, approximately 200,000 women and 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2012 alone, there are expected to be more than 39,000 deaths as a result of breast cancer.

• Consistently conduct self exams: The sooner you can catch any changes in your breasts, the better. It could be helpful to schedule time on your calendar each month to conduct an exam.
• Speak with your doctor about crafting a plan: Depending on your age, your doctor will help you understand what examinations need to be done when. Having a set plan in place can help detect any potential dangers.
