All businesses from the sole entrepreneur to the mega-corporation must market to stay in business. That is the topic of the weekly podcast for September 13th, 2013, from Jonathan Goodman, The School of Internet Marketing instructor and president of Halyard Consulting.

Goodman stated that small and medium-sized businesses are more likely to have this problem than larger companies. They are the ones that are hesitant to write a check for advertising. He stressed that unless a company understands how its competition uses marketing they can’t be successful.

When a company doesn't put money into marketing and advertising, it cannot expect to grow. In fact, the amount of growth a business will see is in direct correlation to how much money was spent on marketing. Goodman further contends that it is essential to invest money in marketing as soon as the business identifies issues.

A business can expect a 1-2% return on investment for any marketing strategy, which is why it is important to invest as much money as the company can afford. However, not being able to invest a large amount shouldn't keep a business from investing something. In the case of marketing, something is better than nothing.
