A school bus that struck a kid-filled car raises questions about road safety.

We place a huge amount of attention on school bus safety, which is completely justified.

Two girls were killed when the car they were in was struck by a school bus in August. Traffic attorney Michael Steinger says that the accident reflects a risk that many parents face.

The bus was heading west when an eastbound passenger car made a left turn in front of it, according to the Orlando Sentinel(08.31.2013). The two girls, ages 11 and 7, died when the bus hit the passenger side of the car.

Steinger, who heads a team of Orlando car accident attorneys at Steinger, Iscoe & Greene, says that while such accidents are uncommon, in any car-versus-bus collision the car is likely to lose.

“We place a huge amount of attention on school bus safety, which is completely justified,” Steinger said. “But it's important to remember that school buses are large, heavy vehicles – much more likely to be the giver than the receiver of serious injuries.”

The driver of the car, Andrea Ruz, was seriously hurt but survived. The school bus contained only three students and the bus driver, all of whom survived unharmed.

“Parents driving kids to and from school have to share close quarters with buses,” Steinger said. “That's a circumstance where you have to be extra alert – school buses aren't bright yellow just for their own sake.”

Florida Highway Patrol has not stated who was at fault in the accident.

“This will take an investigation and it may never be resolved,” Steinger said. “What is clear is that the families of the victims deserve compensation.”
