Drexel University Online Launches Cybersecurity, Law & Policy Certificate
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 07, 2013 -- Drexel University Online, a premier provider of Internet-based higher education, and Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) are pleased to announce the creation of the Certificate in Cybersecurity, Law and Policy.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation reports that over 90 percent of the world’s data has been created within the past two years, and, according to a recent Cisco report, that percentage will only increase as the number of connected devices is expected to exceed the world’s population on earth by 2016.
“Governmental and corporate entities are becoming increasingly reliant on specialists to interpret the legalities and policies to protect information in a number of areas such as healthcare, finance and research and development,” said Dr. David Fenske, dean of CCI. “The College of Computing & Informatics is proud to offer this certificate to give professionals working in a technical or legal setting the edge they need to assess and protect data security.”
Drexel’s online certificate is a three-course program that will offer the fundamentals on cybersecurity, policy and issues of cyber law. It is the first of its kind in examining technical and policy issues under one umbrella, while looking at today’s issues in cybersecurity.
“Recent cyber attacks on The New York Time’s website and various corporations’ Twitter accounts really shed a light on a growing need for professionals trained in cybersecurity,” said Wendy Wiesmiller, senior program director at Drexel University Online. “Our new Certificate in Cybersecurity, Law & Policy was created to meet the industry need and prepare students for this growing field.”
The new certificate particularly responds to the fundamental need for policy and technical professionals who are interested in learning the laws and policy surrounding cybersecurity.
“We’d like to create a bridge between what we like to call the ‘geeks’ and the ‘wonks,’ and have the ability for people who are normally policy people be able to speak to technical people, and have technical people be able to speak to policy people and lawyers,” said Harvey Rishikof, JD, teaching professor and director of Cybersecurity and the Law at Drexel’s CCI and Earle Mack School of Law.
The online Cybersecurity, Law & Policy Certificate program is co-led by Rishikof, an attorney and current chair of the Advisory Committee for the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security. He has first-hand experience in navigating and defending cybersecurity laws, including serving as legal counsel to the FBI concerning national security and terrorism issues and aiding in the draft of Presidential Decision Directives in the national security area.
“Today we have to be able to prevent, contain, and respond to acts of terrorism or acts of criminality as they affect the cyber world,” said Dr. Scott White, professor of homeland security and security management and director of CCI’s Computing and Security Technology program. “Ultimately, we’re all users of technology. As the world continues to grow, so does our technology. Each time we use technology, it has the potential to be infiltrated from someone using a computer from across the world.”
White co-leads the Certificate in Cybersecurity, Law and Policy program and brings his areas of expertise in counterterrorism and emergency management to the program. He is the founder and former director of the Institute of Homeland Security at Westfield State University and is a former commissioned officer of the Canadian Armed Forces Military Intelligence Branch.
The Cybersecurity, Law & Policy Certificate program is available now and is taught by nationally-recognized faculty from the College of Computing & Informatics. For more information on this program or to enroll, please visit http://www.drexel.com.
