Alliance for Women in Media Announces Formation of New Student Affiliate
(PRWEB) October 10, 2013 -- The Alliance for Women in Media is pleased to announce the formation of its newest student affiliate at the University of Minnesota. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota launched the AWM-MN Student Affiliate with the guidance and support of the professional AWM Minnesota Affiliate. Expanding its reach with students is indicative of AWM’s commitment to fostering the growth of women in the media.
“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome the AWM University of Minnesota Student Affiliate,” said Kay Olin, AWM National Chair. “We appreciate the great leadership and mentoring from the local AWM members to help form this student affiliate. This new student-led affiliate will help to expand opportunities for these young women to interact with experienced leaders in the industry.”
The AWM Minnesota Board Members will mentor the student leaders, and Kathleen A. Hansen, Director of Undergraduate Studies, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will serve as Campus Advisor. The officers of the AWM University of Minnesota Student Affiliate were elected at the first board meeting:
• Christina Munnell, President, Junior Professional Journalism
• Molly Davis, President-Elect, Sophomore, Journalism/Photo Journalism
• Maia Noll, Secretary, Sophomore, Strategic Communications
• Tiffany Ng, Treasurer, Senior, Advertising
• Rachel Devries, Programming Chair, Junior, Public Relations
• Emily Planek, Membership, Freshman, Journalism
“These officers displayed passion and commitment to the mission of advancing the impact of women in the media and allied fields. They not only showed up, they asked many questions, displayed a willingness to work together as a team, and always had solutions and ideas on how to resolve challenges in our initial discussions,” said Monique Linder, AWM-MN President. “This student affiliate starts with 31 members – we are already off to a great start. The students bring a whole new energy level to our organization.”
