Huntsville, AL (PRWEB) October 09, 2013 -- There’s an old adage that says first impressions make lasting impressions, and representatives with MapofUS.org, say the new website that they’ve officially launched does exactly that.
“It’s a new site and we’re excited about it, because now that our site is up, we’ll be able to serve and help whoever needs to have old and new state maps and maps of the United States as a whole,” said Brian Nichols, spokesman for Genealogy Inc., the parent company of MapofUS.org.
Nichols explained that on its website, each state has maps showing interactive county formation map, Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) Roads and Highway maps, old Atlas maps, and map links.
The company spokesman went on to point out that each state page contains rotating animated maps showing all of the county boundary changes and all of the county boundaries for each census year.
Past and present maps of the US, according to Nichols, are overlaid so that visitors to the website can see the changes in county boundaries, downloadable County D.O.T. Maps, and state Atlas maps.
Nichols also pointed out that map comparison can be used as a genealogy source, which is something its new website caters to.
“Comparing older maps to newer maps of the same area can often yield information about changes in names of different towns and places over time,” Nichols stressed, before adding, “Such comparisons can also show changes in borders between countries, counties, towns, and other political borders. However, landowners are not often listed on maps.”
In the United States, Nichols noted, property records, death records, and birth records are usually maintained by county officials.
“Therefore, researchers will need to be able to locate the proper county offices to find information on their ancestors,” Nichols said. “This is why it helps to determine exactly where the ancestor lived according to the political borders of the time. Our new website helps with all of this.”
