La Peer Health Systems Participates in Breast Cancer Walk in Studio City
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) October 08, 2013 -- La Peer Health Systems is an outpatient surgery center in the heart of Beverly Hills that boasts some of the best surgeons and physicians in the country. This Sunday, October 6, 2013 in Studio City, 15 members of La Peer’s team participated in a walk with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a national organization dedicated to fighting back against breast cancer.
“We are very excited to be a part of such a wonderful cause,” said Francesca Mercado, a surgical technician at La Peer who participated in the walk. “Our hope is to really make a difference and help this organization fund more research for cancer treatments.”
The La Peer team, named “La Peer Ladies Walking 4 Life,” was led by team, Ann Durham, RN, a nurse at La Peer and a breast cancer survivor. Her story inspired La Peer to form its team and participate in the walk.
“It’s wonderful that we could all come together for such a meaningful cause,” said Durham, who single-handedly raised $1,000 for the team. “Our family-like environment at La Peer is what made this walk so special, and what helped us to have so much success.”
Out of 23 total teams, La Peer was the top fundraising team, raising over $3,000. The La Peer team was awarded a blue ribbon at the finish line for this achievement. In addition to help from their friends and family, the participants also received a $500 donation from La Peer Health Systems for the cause.
“Breast cancer is a very real threat, and education is key to preventing and fighting back against this disease,” said Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at La Peer who also attended the event. “Our goal in participating in this walk was to help raise money for much-needed research, as well as providing all women with access to proper screening.”
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a facet of the American Cancer Society and features the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the country, with about 300 communities involved. Each breast cancer event and walk is an opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer and promote awareness about reducing the risk for the disease. Additionally, these events help to raise money through the American Cancer Society to fight breast cancer with research and innovations in treatment, as well as provide mammograms for women who need them.
The local Los Angeles walk, which is called Making Strides of Studio City, took place in Studio City, beginning at CBS Studios.
