Casey Mathys, MD of Christenbury Eye Center Joins the ECHO Foundation Cataract Surgery Mission to San Pedro Sula, Honduras
Charlotte, North Carolina (PRWEB) October 08, 2013 -- In September, 2013, Dr. Casey Mathys, Cornea and Refractive Surgeon at Christenbury Eye Center, traveled to Honduras on a mission trip through the ECHO Foundation to provide cataract surgeries to 30 patients in need. The mission took place at the Lions Eye Hospital Fraternidad in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

During the week-long trip, Dr. Mathys, along with a Honduran physician, Dr. Franco Pacheco, treated a total of 60 patients of various ages and medical challenges. A Honduran medical student interested in ophthalmology assisted Dr. Mathys with translation while learning basic surgical techniques. Dr. Mathys spent one week operating in the Lions Eye Hospital Fraternidad in San Pedro Sula. With donations from Alcon, Starr and Charlotte Surgery Center, Dr. Mathys was able to provide implantable lenses, medicine, and disposable surgical equipment for these procedures. More than 50,000 residents of Honduras need cataract surgery each year, and this condition is the number 1 cause of blindness in this country. In San Pedro Sula, 8,000 residents are blinded by cataracts each year.
Dr. Casey Mathys specializes in corneal transplants and also cataract surgery, multifocal lens implant surgery, Visian ICL procedures and custom LASIK vision correction procedures.
