LED FloodLights Co. Comment on Installation of LED Streetlights in Orlando
(PRWEB UK) 9 October 2013 -- According to the Orlando Sentinel on October 5, the new LED streetlights have been installed to combat the light pollution which is affecting the area. The city in the state of Florida has begun to upgrade its 14,000 streetlights across neighbourhoods around the city to LED street lights that only illuminate the ground immediately surrounding it.
It’s reported that the city’s current streetlights run on 120 watts, while the LED replacements use 55 watts. Although the existing ‘sodium-vapor’ streetlights run on a higher wattage, much of this energy is wasted. As LED bulbs provide a concentrated beam of light, less light is wasted and light pollution can be reduced.
The reduction in light pollution due to these bulbs is thought to be a benefit to astronomers. Lead astronomy educator at the Orlando Science Center in Orlando told the Orlando Sentinel that with the current streetlights the night sky almost disappears at night. The astronomy centre is located nearby to principal sources of light pollution such as the downtown skyline and the Orange County Courthouse. This 24 storey building is home to 110 floodlights which have also been replaced by LEDs in order to minimise light pollution.
Orlando’s initiative to replace their existing streetlights with LED alternatives follows a number of U.S. cities which have installed LED lighting, such as Seattle, Boston and Las Vegas.
The specialists at LED Floodlights Co. closely follow industry related news and, as specialists in energy efficient LED lighting products, the company were interested in this recent news story. A spokesperson for the company shared their thoughts:
“In large cities around the world light pollution from buildings, floodlights and streetlights can be a problem. It is welcome news that cities are realising the benefits of LED lighting and are beginning to install more energy efficient replacements. As LED bulbs emit a concentrated beam of light, these bulbs are ideal for floodlights and streetlights as the light is concentrated on a particular area, instead of the light escaping into the surrounding areas. We look forward to seeing other cities follow suit and install LED streetlights.”
The experts at LED Floodlights Co. are dedicated to providing an extensive range of energy efficient lighting LED floodlight products, including motion sensor LED floodlights and portable LED floodlights. Based in the UK, the team provide a wide range of LED floodlight products suitable for domestic and commercial use.
