Even a slight tear to the labrum can be quite serious and develop into a much more debilitating condition, if left untreated.

A recent article from outlined Seahawks’ player Percy Harvin’s potentially serious hip injury. At La Peer’s Hip Surgery Center of Excellence, the team of hip surgery specialists is concerned that similar injuries are becoming increasingly common among professional athletes.

Jason Snibbe, MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the Hip Surgery Center of Excellence, commented that, “Even a slight tear to the labrum can be quite serious and develop into a much more debilitating condition, if left untreated.”

According to Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll, medical professionals are examining Harvin in order to properly diagnose the injury and decide upon an effective course of treatment. This latest injury is just one in a slew of health ailments that have plagued Harvin since signing with the Seahawks last March. The 25-year-old wide receiver may or may not require arthroscopic surgery, leading to speculation about whether he will be recovered in time for the 2013 Super Bowl.

“Unfortunately, Percy Harvin has joined a long list of professional athletes who have sustained a moderate to severe hip injury within the last decade. In fact, Alex Rodriguez also recently suffered a torn labrum which required surgery,” noted Rajan Patel, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor at La Peer. “The best way to prevent a hip injury from becoming more severe is to seek immediate treatment with a qualified doctor.”

The doctors at the Hip Surgery Center of Excellence offer a number of surgical and non-surgical treatments for torn labrums and other conditions. The team of expert orthopedic surgeons specializes in hip arthroscopy, hip dislocation surgery, and hip replacements, to name only a few. They currently boast a staff that includes some of the most renowned, highly specialized orthopedic surgeons in the country
