International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) Marks World Sight Day By Urging Everyone to Get Their Eyes Tested
Corona, California (PRWEB) October 09, 2013 -- Universal Eye Health is the theme for World Sight Day 2013 and this year’s call to action is simple: get your eyes tested. It’s a mantra that has long been adopted by the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS), a group of United States optometrists who provide solutions for vision limiting conditions including Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.
“IALVS completely endorses the World Health Organization in its efforts to bring awareness to leading causes of blindness,” said Dr. Richard J. Shuldiner, low vision optometrist and founder of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) in the US. “IALVS strongly suggests is early testing and a low vision exam, which is completely in line with this year’s call to action for World Sight Day. WHO statistics show 80% of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured. Get your eyes tested, it’s that simple.”
IALVS is on the cutting edge of technological advances that can even restore a more normal life to patients. New technologies include miniature telescopes and e-scoop that allow patients to engage in normal daily activities. AMD, the most common cause of vision loss after age 50, causes gradual loss of central (but not peripheral) vision, which is needed for detailed work.
Unlike most eye doctors, IALVS optometrists are specially trained in advanced optics and magnification techniques that allow patients to participate in activities such as reading, sewing, watching TV and even driving.
The World Health Organization marks World Sight Day each year on the second Thursday in October. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 80% of the world’s 45 million blind persons are older than 50.
