Innovators Love Blue with 1% for the Planet
Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2013 -- On October 10th, 1% for the Planet will host the culminating event of its 10th Anniversary Celebration Series in Berkeley, Ca. The event will feature a night of networking, a panel discussion between 1% for the Planet business member Klean Kanteen® and nonprofit partner 5 Gyres, and a special appearance by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and co-founder of 1% for the Planet.
1% for the Planet was started by Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. Their goal was to create a network that would become a platform for credibility and engagement for environmentally conscious brands. Ten years later, 1% for the Planet has grown to include over 1,100 businesses worldwide that donate 1% of their sales to environmental nonprofits. In addition to its 10th anniversary, the network recently celebrated another huge milestone: $100 million in cumulative giving, showing that organizations can make a much greater impact working together than they can alone.
The network has celebrated its 10th anniversary with its members, partners, and ambassadors in cities all over the world, including Paris, London, Vancouver, and Ojai. In 2002, 1% for the Planet’s first official launch event took place at the Patagonia store in San Francisco and because of this, it’s fitting to host the pinnacle celebration where the network got its start, said 1% for the Planet CEO Terry Kellogg.
“We’ve developed a great network of California-based members and with this event, we’re celebrating their commitment and successes while going back to our roots,” said Kellogg. “The San Francisco area is not only home to many environmentally conscious brands, but is where the 1% idea became a movement. Our network has expanded so much in the last ten years and continues to grow daily. It is nice to take a moment to celebrate in the city where it all began.”
The evening will start with networking and festivities. The invite only, standing room crowd will then head to the theater in the David Brower Center. There, Yvon Chouinard will give a talk focused on 1%’s first ten years, business growth, and Patagonia’s recently announced Responsible Economy Campaign. This will lead into a panel discussion where Jim Osgood, CEO of Klean Kanteen and Stiv Wilson, Policy Director for 5 Gyres, will talk about their 1% for the Planet partnership created to inspire, educate, and encourage alternatives to single use waste.
