Local Hosts: Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Greater Louisville Council of Teachers of Mathematics

WHAT: NCTM’s Regional Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas will offer more than 200 sessions and workshops, covering all levels, pre-K–grade 12. The three-day conference will feature many presenters from Kentucky and the surrounding states; other presentations will be given by educators from throughout the United States and Canada. Topics related to pressing issues in math education will include STEM instruction, formative assessment, the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), instructional best practices, how to use new technologies to support and enhance math instruction, and more.

WHEN: November 6–8

WHERE: Kentucky International Convention Center

Presentations: New content standards alone are unlikely to reduce existing learning differentials. At the conference’s Opening Session, keynote speaker Matthew Larson, Lincoln (Nebraska) Public Schools, will present “The Challenge of Making CCSSM Matter.” Larson will discuss the five paradigm shifts that implementation efforts must simultaneously address. This session will kick off the conference on Wednesday, November 6, 5:30–7:00 p.m.

On Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8, an interactive workshop will offer tips for all new and preservice teachers on how to manage classrooms, work with parents, find engaging lessons, and handle homework. The sessions will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

On Friday, November 8, NCTM President Linda Gojak will discuss how a rich problem can be the umbrella for incorporating mathematical practice into mathematics content in the elementary grades. This session, “It’s Raining Rich Problems!” will offer some practical suggestions to turn this vision into practice and is scheduled for 8:00–9:00 a.m.

On Friday, November 8, the session “NCTM Board Hot Topic—Embracing the Common Core: An Opportunity, Not a Burden” will run from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about NCTM’s Common Core–related efforts and share their own successes and challenges.

Registration: Attendees may register on-site at the Kentucky International Convention Center on Wednesday, November 6, 5:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., and Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Exhibits: Hundreds of the latest education products will be on display in the NCTM Exhibit Hall at the Kentucky International Convention Center on Thursday, November 7, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Friday, November 8, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

WHY: The conference will facilitate an exchange of ideas among mathematics educators on the best teaching practices and how students learn mathematics, thus enabling teachers to return to their classrooms better prepared to teach mathematics to all students.
