Brain State Technologies Announces Presentation of HIRREM Research Data on PTSD and Heart Rate Variability at American Neurological Association Annual Meeting
Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) October 15, 2013 -- Brain State Technologies®, developer of HIRREM™, a patented process to facilitate relaxation and auto-calibration of neural oscillations, is pleased to announce that two separate abstracts related to their signature technology have been accepted for poster presentation at the American Neurological Association Annual Meeting in New Orleans from October 13-15, 2013. The American Neurological Association is a professional society of academic neurologists and neuroscientists, and the posters are two of four that have been accepted for presentation at their meeting in the category of “Neurotechnology.” The posters describe studies conducted by Professor Charles Tegeler, M.D., at Wake Forest School of Medicine, who is supported by a research grant from The Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation, Inc.
The first poster, titled "Neural-oscillatory Intervention for Auto-calibration Improves EEG Symmetry and Heart Rate Variablility," looks at the impact of HIRREM on Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Lower HRV may indicate reduced vagal tone, a trait associated with a large variety of neurological and psychophysiological conditions including post-traumatic stress, insomnia, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, and hot flashes. Researchers observed that improvement in EEG asymmetry as affected through application of HIRREM was accompanied by improvement in HRV. The findings “suggest a potential role of HIRREM for disorders associated with…autonomic dysregulation.”
The second poster is titled "High-resolution, Relational, Resonance-based Electroencephalic Mirroring (HIRREM) Reduces Symptoms and EEG Asymmetry in an Individual with PTSD." Building on previous studies linking PTSD to hemispheric imbalance in the brain, this abstract describes the reduction of EEG asymmetry and PTSD symptoms in an individual after undergoing the HIRREM process.
Conceived by Lee Gerdes and developed over the past decade by Brain State Technologies, the company he founded, HIRREM is more commonly known as Brainwave Optimization®. The patented process involves translating an individual’s brain wave activity as read by EEG sensors into audible tones of changing pitch and timing, and playing these spontaneously generated soundscapes back to the individual in real-time. Thus the technology creates a loop between the brain and its computer-processed auditory reflection. The process has been noted for its tendency to facilitate relaxation and self-adjustment of brain wave activity toward greater symmetry and optimized proportionation.
Dr. Sung Lee, Director of Research at Brain State Technologies, and members of the Wake Forest team that conducted the research will personally attend the Annual Meeting and will be available throughout the event for questions regarding the research and HIRREM.
