Government Shutdown Means Routine FDA Food Facility Inspections Suspended
Nashville, TN (PRWEB) October 12, 2013 -- According to an Oct. 8, 2013, report by http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/08/20873175-routine-fda-inspections-of-food-facilities-suspended-due-to-government-shutdown? lite [NBC News __title__ ], “routine” inspections of food facilities by the Food and Drug Administration have been suspended as a result of the current U.S. government shutdown.
With approximately 60 percent of FDA inspectors on furlough, almost all of the agency’s focus is now on dealing with recalls, outbreaks and other situations requiring immediate attention. FDA officials are saying that the longer the government shutdown lasts, the greater effect it will have on consumers. Even after the shutdown ends, FDA food facility inspectors will have a backlog of work, meaning that the effects of the shutdown will last longer than the shutdown itself.
“Right now, it’s likely that outbreaks aren’t being recognized, and if they are, their investigations aren’t being completed in a timely way,” said Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “And that means contaminated food products aren’t being removed from the market as quickly as they should be.”
Food4Patriots, the supplier of emergency food suitable for long-term storage, survival and emergency preparedness, recommends the stockpiling of healthy foods to be used during a crisis. In July, the company launched a product line that includes 72-hour, four-week and three-month emergency food kits.
The food in these emergency kits can be prepared in less than 20 minutes and requires nothing more than boiling water. It is kept in easy-to-store Mylar pouches, which keep out air, moisture and light. Shelf lives are up to 25 years. Among the nutritious foods that are part of the Food4Patriots’ kits are:
• Mountain Man Granola
• Apple Orchard Oatmeal
• Granny’s Homestyle Potato Soup
• Blue Ribbon Cheesy Chicken Rice
• Ol’ 49ers Hearty Chili
• Creamy Beef Stroganoff
• Frank’s Five Star Minestrone.
Those who order one of the Food4Patriots Emergency Kits will also receive four reports: “Top 10 Items Sold Out After Crisis,” “The Water Survival Guide,” “The Survival Garden Guide” and “How to Cut Your Grocery Bills in Half.”
