While self-directed IRAs give the account owner control over their investment choices, there are crucial elements investors must adhere to in order to achieve success.

Many investors have found the use of self-directed IRAs can potentially build wealth towards retirement at a faster pace than the traditional stock, bond or mutual fund. Self-directed IRA owners are able to invest in alternative investments including real estate, rental properties, LLCs, precious metals, futures and foreign exchange, private placements and much more. In fact, the only items not allowed as assets as determined by the IRS are collectibles and life insurance policies.

“The advantage self-directed IRA owners have is they choose their own investments in things they know, understand and can control instead of allowing a third party to make investments for them,” says Jack Callahan, Managing Partner of Advanta IRA Services, in Largo, Florida. “However,” continues Callahan, “while self-directed IRAs give the account owner control over their investment choices, there are crucial elements investors must adhere to in order to achieve success.” Not following these rules can result in heavy penalties or even disqualification of the retirement account in question.
