Stairwell Collapse in the East Village Injures Student: New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Comments
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 16, 2013 -- A New York University student suffered major injuries after he fell down three stories when the stairwell in an East Village apartment building gave way. A Sept. 30 news report in The Wall Street Journal states that the incident occurred during a party when more than 35 people were on the roof of the seven-story walk-up building. The student was coming down the steps from the seventh floor and jumped on a landing when a portion of the stairwell collapsed, the report stated. The man suffered injuries, but is said to be in stable condition, according to the article.
The New York City Department of Buildings issued multiple citations to the property management company, Sasha Realty LLC., for illegal occupancy of the roof and failure to maintain the building, the report stated. Some of the stranded partygoers were evacuated by firefighters using a bucket ladder and others had to climb down the fire escape, the article said.
It is indeed fortunate that the victim was not more seriously injured, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "The manner in which this stairway collapsed, a lot more people could have been injured had they been there at the time. This was an extremely dangerous situation."
Stairway accidents often result in serious injuries that require a lengthy recovery time, Wilhelm says. "These injury victims end up having to take more time away from work and pay out-of-pocket costs for treatments such as physical therapy or chiropractic care. In cases where catastrophic injuries occur, victims may never be able to work or earn a livelihood again."
Property owners and managers have a responsibility to fully maintain their premises, Wilhelm said. "This includes conducting routine inspections and ensuring that everything is in good working order. When owners or managers fail to maintain their properties as required, visitors, guests and/or tenants could end up paying a hefty price."
