Team Meh Wins “Best in Show” Award at Dominion Enterprises’ Hackathon 6
Norfolk, VA (PRWEB) October 18, 2013 -- On October 3-4, Dominion Enterprises employees and members of the local computer programming community participated in Dominion’s sixth and most innovative “hackathon.” This two-day event took place at Dominion’s headquarters in Norfolk.
Like most hackathons, this unique event challenged participants to create working computer programs and products. However, this time there was a twist -- the programmers had to build products using APIs that were drawn at random. An API specifies a set of functions or routines that accomplish a specific task or are allowed to interact with a specific software component.
Nine teams of up to six participants began the morning of October 3 and continued through the next day. After this marathon programming session -- dubbed “two days of pure hack”-- the teams presented their creations to a panel of judges who awarded prizes to the best products in four categories: Most Market-Ready, Most Innovative, Best Integration of APIs, and Best in Show.
The winners of the event were:
• Most Market-Ready: Buy vs. Rent -- Team It’s Done Enough
(Jen Rosenau, Stephanie Senechal, Daniel Gallagher, Lori Hardin, Robert Krieger, and Tim Frigge)
• Most Innovative: Data Bake -- Team Chicken Dinner
(Robert Bittle, Brandon Beigay, Lucien Frelin, Chris Ryan, Spencer Rinehart, and Matt Strapko)
• Best API Integration: Auto Mobile -- Team The Gnarly Narwhales
Candi Ligutan, Carl Tarkenton, Tyler Swane, and Minh Nguyen)
• Best in Show: Instacycle -- Team Meh
(Stanley Zenng, Benedict Cipcon, Jose Mateo, Odean Maye, Lookmai Rattana, and Trisha Tobias)
Judges included Dominion Enterprises President & Chief Operating Officer Jack Ross and Chief Information Officer Joe Fuller, as well as notable local technophiles Zack Miller, Joe LaFond, and Matt Paddock. All participants received gifts and were eligible to win raffled books and other prizes. Winning teams took home Raspberry Pi single-board computers, and the team members of Team Meh, who earned Best in Show, won Nexus 7 tablets.
