Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) October 15, 2013 -- Dr. Daniel Cottam, bariatric surgeon for the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Utah at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and Bariatric Institute of Utah, is the recipient of the 2013 Utah Business Magazine Healthcare Heroes Physician Award. During the annual Healthcare Heroes reception on October 8, Cottam, along with other outstanding healthcare professionals, was recognized for surgical excellence and his influential role in the development of bariatric surgical techniques.
“It is an honor for one of our surgeons with the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Utah at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center to receive such a prestigious award,” said Dale Johns, CEO at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. “Dr. Cottam uses his expertise to change and save lives every day. Not only does he provide comprehensive treatment options for weight loss, he also understands the importance of complete patient support, both emotionally and physically. Dr. Cottam’s main concern has always been and continues to be his patients’ health and quality of life.”
During his fellowship at Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsch Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Cottam was a part of the research team to develop the sleeve gastrectomy, a surgery that modifies the size and shape of the stomach to limit the amount of food an individual can eat. This surgery is now one of the most commonly performed surgical weight loss procedures in the country. Cottam also helped develop revisional endoscopic bariatric surgery.
Cottam and his medical staff at the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Utah apply a life-changing program to assist patients with long-term weight loss success. This program includes performing patient-specific bariatric surgeries in combination with nutritional guidance, counseling, specialized fitness training, and support groups.
