CMS’s Recovery Audit Program Now Exceeds $5 Billion in Corrections

With publication of its April-June 2013 results, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) now attributes recoveries of more than $5 billion in erroneous payments to its national Recovery Audit Program since inception in 2009. For fiscal year 2013, Connolly leads the next closest recovery auditor in total corrections by nearly $20 million.

“Our results reflect the experience of our team of nurses, coders and medical directors and their strong understanding of Medicare policy,” said Chad Janak, Connolly Vice President responsible for the firm’s efforts. “We delivered more dollars for the Medicare Trust Fund in the quarter than ever before, and we continue to find new areas for recovery,” he added.

Created through the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA), the Recovery Auditor program is a cost containment effort aimed at reducing improper payments within Medicare programs as well as identifying process improvements to reduce or eliminate future improper payments. Connolly was the prime contractor for NY State in the Medicare RA demonstration project and was subsequently awarded a contract to provide Medicare recovery audit services for the rollout of the program into Region C, the southeastern US.
