Raymond Sandiford, PE, F.ASCE, joins HNTB Corporation as geotechnical and foundation practice leader within the tunneling and underground practice. He will support projects worldwide from his office in New York City. Prior to joining HNTB, Sandiford was geotechnical and underground chief engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey where he directed major geotechnical and underground construction projects for more than three decades. He also joins HNTB as associate vice president.
Sandiford’s experience includes program management, project management and design and construction of major complex infrastructure programs. He has managed various consultants and contractors on a range of multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects. His areas of expertise include rail, tunnels and shafts, bridges, complex underground projects, transit facilities, safety and security projects, highways, airport facilities and marine facilities.
“Ray’s variety of experiences and technical skills are a great addition as we continue growing HNTB’s tunneling and underground engineering practice,” said Nasri Munfah, PE, HNTB chair tunnel services. “His significant working knowledge of large-scale underground programs will be invaluable to our clients on major projects such as the Baltimore B&P tunnel, the Metro Crenshaw/LAX transit project in Los Angeles, and the SR 99 Alaskan Way Tunnel in Seattle.”
Sandiford’s experience includes post-9/11 restoration projects for PANYNJ, including direction of all underground design for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center subsurface work. This included a new pedestrian tunnel, the 9/11 Memorial, the World Trade Center slurry walls, underground garage and the WTC Security Center. He also directed all underground work for the restoration of PATH services in New Jersey and construction of the PATH temporary station in New York after the events of 9/11.
Sandiford graduated from Columbia University with his master’s degree in civil engineering. He is a member of several professional associations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Moles, Deep Foundations Institute, and Industrial Advisory Committee of the Columbia University School of Engineering.
