AlertBoot Brings Password Policy Control to BYOD to Help with HIPAA Compliance
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 17, 2013 -- AlertBoot, a leading provider of mobile device management (MDM) and full disk encryption managed services, is rolling out a Windows password policy enforcement tool for Windows PCs in workgroup environments. The beta version was released to select AlertBoot clients on Monday and will be deployed to all AlertBoot users shortly.
Earlier this year, AlertBoot released an upgraded version of its cloud-managed full disk encryption, followed by the integration of an MDM solution for smartphones and tablets into its BYOD security services. The development of the password policy enforcement tool, expressly created for clients who do not have an Active Directory infrastructure, is in keeping with AlertBoot's commitment to innovation and increase in BYOD security while lowering clients' security costs.
"Traditional FDE and MDM solutions make significant use of directory services, like Active Directory, to ease and simplify software deployment as well as to assign and enforce computer security policies. Such software doesn't come cheap," noted Tim Maliyil, CEO and founder of AlertBoot. "While the cost can be justified by large companies, SMEs have better ways to allocate their limited resources. But, covered entities don't have a choice in this matter because password security, under HIPAA guidelines, is as important as using encryption on laptops."
Surveys conducted over the years have shown that a significant percentage of employees, even when aware of the risks, choose weak passwords that might not comply with corporate policies. Even more troubling are employees who are not even aware that such policies exist, indirectly proving the need for a security tool that empowers administrators to set password lengths, the use of special characters, and other password policies that will meet HIPAA encryption compliance rules.
With AlertBoot's latest feature, medical organizations and HIPAA business associates will be able to better comply with HIPAA security guidelines, lowering the overall risk of a data breach that could expose them to significant fines and other penalties. While the use of strong passwords is not technically a HIPAA requirement, it has been listed as a "best practice" as well as "expected" in myriad HIPAA documents and guidelines.
