Localgiving.com brings it all together beautifully. We're delighted to help support something that is really important.

An invited audience from the third sector heard the Minister describe why match funds and Localgiving.com are so important to small, local charities. “We are the fourth most generous country in the world,” he said, “and giving remains stable, which is magnificent. But, we [the OCS] are looking for growth, and what’s working for most people is digital.”

The Minister said that people want to give what they can afford, and they want to give locally, where they can see what is happening on their doorstep. “Localgiving.com brings it all together beautifully. We’re delighted to help to support something that is really important.”

Localgiving.com founder and executive chairman, Marcelle Speller OBE, explained that the Office for Civil Society had funded Grow Your Tenner with a £500,000 match pot which would grow to over £1 million for grassroots charities across England. Single donations are being matched up to £10 and monthly donations are matched up to £10 a month for six months.

Speller emphasised the need to support those small, local charities at the rock face in their communities. Citing Charity Commission figures she said: “The 5% biggest registered charities receive 85% of charitable income. Put it another way, 95% of registered charities share 15% of charitable income. And 42% of registered charities with income of less than £10,000 per year receive 0.4% of all charitable income.”

Since it went live on Tuesday (October 15), Grow Your Tenner has already matched over £100,000 in donations, or one fifth of the total pot. The campaign will continue until all funds are allocated.
