In the 2013 National League Championship Series, two of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball history squared for the right to advance to the World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals and their 11 World Series titles took on the Los Angeles Dodgers and their six World Series titles. With the series now complete, the Cardinals will advance to the World Series to take on the American League representative, the winner of the Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox series.
Throughout the years, both the Cardinals and Dodgers have been successful because of excellent pitching, timely hitting and smart managerial moves. When you look at both teams, the name of postseason heroes go on and on, but for this season, it will be the Cardinals led by Carlos Beltran, Yadier Molina looking to give the NL their fourth straight World Series win. The NL still trails the AL in World Series titles 62-46, but has won more titles since the new millennium began.
Since the Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the first World Series in 1903, the championship series has been an annual tradition in each season except for two, 1904 and 1994. It didn't take long for a team to win back-to-back titles as the Chicago Cubs won in 1907 and 1908 and the Philadelphia Athletics weren't too far behind as they won in 1910 and 1911.
Some interesting facts about the World Series that are not well known is the Toronto Blue Jays were the first non-American team to win a World Series, knocking off the Atlanta Braves in 1992. Just two MLB teams have reached the World Series on more than one occasion without a loss. The first being the Blue Jays and the other team being the Marlins, while the Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels are the only other teams with a perfect World Series winning percentage.
Since the year 2000, the NL West has been the division in the NL that has won the most World Series titles. Combined, the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks have won three titles, while the lone team from the NL Central to win a World Series during that time is the Cardinals. The AL East has taken four titles during that time as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have each claimed two titles. The only other teams to win a World Series since 2000 are the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.
Game one of the World Series will emanate from either Fenway Park or Comerica Park depending on who wins the ALCS on Wednesday, October 23. Game two will occur the next night before the teams get a day to travel before getting three straight in St. Louis. If necessary, the fifth game will be held on Monday, October 28th and games six and seven would take place in either Detroit or Boston on Wednesday and Thursday, October 30 and 31.
