A Fish a Day to Keep the Pain Away?

The August 31, 2013 issue of The Lancet published Vascular and upper gastrointestinal effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: meta-analyses of individual participant data from randomised trials. The authors did meta-analyses of 280 trials comparing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to placebos involving 124,513 participants. They also looked at 474 trials comparing one NSAID to another involving 229,296 participants. Major vascular events (heart attacks, strokes, etc.) were increased by nearly a third by those using a coxib or diclofenac. While ibuprofen significantly increased major coronary events, it did not significantly increase vascular events. The risk of heart failure was roughly doubled along with increased upper gastrointestinal complications by all NSAIDs studied.
The research team led by Ru-Rong Ji at Duke University Medical Center examined the bioactive lipid neuroprotectin D1/protectin D1 (NPD1/PD1) which is produced in human white blood cells in response to external stimuli such as stress or pain. NPD1/PD1 has been found to resolve both brain and abdominal inflammation and the resulting pain. Their results were published in the Annals of Neurology May 2013 titled Neuroprotectin/protectin D1 protects against neuropathic pain in mice after nerve trauma. While NPD1/PD1 is derived from omega-3 fatty acids found in the oil of cold water fish, it is 1000 times more powerful at reducing inflammation than omega-3 fatty acids. The researchers found that not only did NPD1/PD1 relieve pain, it reduced nerve swelling and protected the nerves from further damage following injuries.
Earlier research about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids as a natural alternative for controlling pain was done by Dr. Joseph Maroon, MD, professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Dr. Maroon specializes in treating chronic degenerative spine disease. He is also the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Dr. Maroon has had outstanding success treating both chronic pain patients and injured football players with high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.
Dr. Maroon reported his amazing results at the 73rd meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He treated 253 non-surgical candidates with chronic neck or back pain with high daily doses of omega-3 fatty acids. After an average of 75 days, 59% had stopped taking their prescription pain killers, and 88% were pleased enough with their results that they continued taking the omega-3 supplements. No significant adverse effects were reported in his study. Dr. Moellendorf notes that this study, along with many parallel research studies, have found that omega-3 fatty acids are equal to ibuprofen in the reduction of arthritic pain.
