Florida National University Holds Meet & Greet for Its Men’s College Basketball Team
Hialeah, FL (PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- On Saturday, October 19th, 2013, Florida National University (FNU) held a meet and greet to introduce the Conquistadors: FNU’s first-ever men’s college basketball team. The event took place at Florida National University’s Hialeah Campus in Hialeah, Florida.
Under a bright, sunny day, FNU proudly introduced the team and its coaches. FNU Athletic Director/Head Coach Scott Schmidt said, “I’d like to thank everyone for their support and for coming out here today.” Coach Schmidt then introduced Assistant Coaches James “JJ” Thatcher and Robert Donohue. Following the coaches’ introductions, the players took turns introducing themselves and mentioning their hometown.
The celebration continued with the team signing commemorative posters, mingling with the community, and posing for photographs. Music was provided by DJ Phil. Crunch Fitness of Hialeah got the crowd moving with an energizing 10-minute cardio workout. Over lunch, attendees were given the opportunity to meet the players on a one-to-one basis. The event concluded with a commemorative cake being served to all in attendance.
Forming an athletic department and the creation of a basketball team marks a major milestone for Florida National University, the City of Hialeah’s first and only university, with over 30 years of providing post-secondary education to the South Florida community.
The Conquistadors Team is affiliated with the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) which is dedicated to “leveling the playing field for America’s small colleges.” The team is composed of one head coach, two assistant coaches, two student managers and 17 players. Four of the players are from Miami, FL. Center Christopher Miranda, a graduate from Miami Springs High School, is from Hialeah, Florida along with student manager Jon Arista. The Conquistadors’ first game will be held on Saturday, October 26th, 2013. They will be playing the Tigers from Edwards College in Jacksonville, Florida.
Following a five-game road trip, the team will be playing its first home game on Wednesday, November 6th, 2013, when they will be playing the Royals from Warner University.
