Unique Dry Eye Relief Technology Builds Momentum with a New Global Patent
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- Dry eye complaints such as itching or burning eyes, are now the number one reason for eye doctor visits in the United States. Bio Logic Aqua Research, a water and health research center in Grants Pass, Oregon, has been working on the problem with eye doctors worldwide for many years. As a result, the research center developed and patented the first ever non-eye drop product for dry eye relief. According to Founder Sharon Kleyne, the research center’s US patent was the first ever awarded on pure water as an application for dry eye relief.
According to Kleyne, Natures Tears® EyeMist®, the personal, portable hand-held humidifying device, with proprietary technology developed and patented by her research center, was widely accepted by doctors, patients and buyers. Prior to 2008, the product was available online, in 70,000 retail outlets and in several thousand doctors’ offices. During the nationwide financial slowdown, the company was unable to maintain its national advertising commitment and accounts were lost.
Substantial progress has been made in recovering those accounts and expanding sales to a global market. This effort was substantially helped by the recent awards of global patents on the proprietary bag-on-valve technology behind Natures Tears® EyeMist®.
The patent, according to Bio Logic Aqua Research Patent Attorney Howard Eisenberg, describes dryness of the eye, and the resulting irritation, as being due to evaporation of a portion of the water from the middle, or “aqueous” layer of the highly complex tear film covering the eye’s surface. The tear film is 98% water and without the moist tear film, vision would not be possible. When water is lost to excessive evaporation or poor tear production, the fluid in the middle layer becomes overly concentrated, resulting in s stinging sensation.
Nature’s Tears® Eye Mist®, Kleyne explains, contains 100% water which the hand-held medical device applies to an ultra-fine spray consisting of microscopic droplets between 5 and 150 microns in diameter. Rather than apply a single large drop to the eye, Natures Tears® Eye Mist® presents a rapid increase in external humidity, both to the airborne water vapor surrounding the eye and to the eye’s surface.
When spray is applied and the amount of water vapor surrounding the eye is increased, reports Eisenberg in reference to the patent description, the tiny water droplets land on the outermost tear film layer, called the “lipid” or oil layer, and then make their way through the lipids – much like vinegar penetrates salad oil – to replenish water lost from the aqueous layer.
Kleyne’s research has proven that the amount of water required to restore the tear film’s moisture balance is minuscule. Dry eye complaints are experienced after a loss of only 2% of the tear film’s water volume. In most cases, the addition of less than five microliters (millionths of a liter) of pure water will restore the tear film to full capacity.
When water is added to the aqueous layer as an ultra-fine mist, the patent description concludes, the fluid in this layer is diluted to its correct osmolarity and is no longer overly concentrated. The burning and irritating sensations are relieved and the eyes now feel good again.
In addition to her role as Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, Sharon Kleyne also hosts the globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes.
