Ernst & Young Foundation’s 2013 Tax Educators’ Symposium Shares Latest Developments to Tax Accounting Professors
Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- Following new 2013 tax laws, debates on tax reform and the Affordable Care Act, and increased enforcement activities by tax administrators globally, the annual EY Tax Educators’ Symposium shares current developments and their implications with tax professors from universities across the country. Since the fall of 2005, the symposium has continued to grow steadily, this year reaching a record number of registered attendees.
The event is sponsored by the Ernst & Young Foundation as a centerpiece to its commitment to providing tax faculty with leading-edge resources and meaningful continuing education, as well as facilitating discussion between the academic community and tax practitioners. The symposium combines both formal technical sessions and informal gatherings.
“Considering all of the significant changes underway in the US tax system and globally, educators must stay ahead of the curve on tax policies and regulations,” said host Tom Neubig, National Tax principal and leader of Ernst & Young’s Quantitative Economics and Statistics (QUEST) group. ”Besides offering the latest on tax developments and practices, the symposium also allows us the opportunity to learn more from these leading academics to help meet the educational demands of future tax professionals.”
In addition to the timely update on tax reform and tax policy, the two-day symposium offers another 15 technical sessions focused on some of the most complex regulatory and tax issues. Topics include: the Affordable Care Act, the OECD base erosion and profit sharing initiative, cloud computing and its tax impact, estate and gift taxation, global compliance and reporting, M&A tax issues, accounting for income and non-income taxes, as well as tax issues in the oil/gas, leasing and tax-exempt sectors. The symposium also includes sessions on the changing tax practice rules and standards and on tax research tools for faculty and students.
"The Foundation's Tax Symposium provides a unique opportunity for tax faculty to explore current tax issues in practice," said Wayne Shaw of Southern Methodist University. "The information provided by EY professionals assists us by adding the richness of real world examples for our students. I especially look forward to seeing the new practice issues raised by David Northcut relating to Accounting for Income Taxes each year."
In addition to this faculty-dedicated event, Ernst & Young LLP hosts many programs to help attract college students to the firm, including its Global Student Experience program, Emerging Leaders Summit and International Intern Leadership Conference, with thousands of participants annually.
“College is a time to initiate future relationships; just as students are looking to build relationships with firms, we hope to build relationships with the next generation of future tax professionals,” said Megan Goeltz, Ernst & Young’s Tax Campus Recruiting Leader. “That connection begins with the professors who educate and prepare students for their future careers. This year we are looking to hire over 1,200 students off campus to join the firm’s Tax practice, a 45% increase over the past 5 years.”
The annual symposium kicks off today and runs through October 25 in Washington, DC.
