Dr. Usha Rajagopal, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in San Francisco’s Union Square area, announced this week that the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center will now offer CoolSculpting in addition to its various other services, making the practice one of the first in Northern California to do so.

CoolSculpting is an innovative technology that uses targeted cooling to attack fat cells. The procedure has been cleared by the FDA, and its non-invasive nature is garnering increasing attention from patients and plastic surgeons alike.

“It’s hard to believe that a completely non-invasive approach—no surgery, no needles are involved—can be an effective way to remove unwanted fat, but clinical studies have shown CoolSculpting to be very effective, and it’s getting great reviews so far,” said Dr. Rajagopal. “I think a lot of people shy away from fat removal procedures like liposuction because of the length of recovery, so it’s wonderful to be able to offer a procedure like this one, which requires no downtime at all.”

CoolSculpting—which sprang from research performed at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA that demonstrated that fat cells are more susceptible to cold than other cells—works by gently (and painlessly) cooling unwanted fat cells in the body. In the weeks following treatment, the cooled fat cells begin to shrink in a process called “apoptosis.” As this happens, the body gradually eliminates the cells on its own, thereby reducing the thickness of the fat layer in the targeted area.

Patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment; the most dramatic results, however, tend to present themselves between two to four months later.

“We’re excited to be able to offer this breakthrough treatment,” said Dr. Rajagopal. “It’s always exciting to find new ways to help our patients feel good about themselves—and so far we’re getting nothing but a positive response about CoolSculpting!”

At the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Usha Rajagopal and her highly trained staff bring an integrated and comprehensive team approach, along with women’s insight and sensitivity, to the art of cosmetic surgery.
