With Halloween around the corner, FrontPoint Security, the nationwide leader in wireless home security, announces it has released its top 10 safety tips to keep children and homes safe during this night of fun.
Widely recognized as the host month to trick-or-treating, October is also National Crime Prevention Month and presents an opportunity to reflect on Halloween safety. Here are a few steps to ensure a fun and safe evening:
Clean Up the Yard – Put away anything that trick-or-treaters may trip over. Move any tools and ladders lying around as burglars can easily use them to break into a home. For home security system owners, avoid decorations that cover yard signs or window decals.
Control Pets – Keep pets away from trick-or-treaters. Pet behavior can be unpredictable, especially on an active night like Halloween. Some children may also have pet allergies.
Drive Slow – When driving through neighborhoods, use extreme caution. Children will be crossing the street and many will wear dark costumes.
Have a Plan – Before hitting the neighborhood, outline a route with your kids. While younger children need to be accompanied by an adult, older children can go out in a group with friends. Create a buddy system beforehand and make sure someone in the group has a cell phone.
Lights On – Light up your home, both inside and out. Lights help children their way and make it easier to know which houses are participating in the festivities. Lights also serve as a deterrent for burglars.
Lock It Up – Remember to lock all doors and windows. Much of the focus for the night will be on the front door, and burglars will use that to their advantage.
Timing is Everything – Set a curfew for your kids and set a time to stop answering the door for trick-or-treaters. While it can be tempting to extend the festivities late into the night, the best way to ensure your family, home and neighborhood are safe is to shut down shortly after nightfall. This will also encourage other children and families to head home for the night.
Stranger Danger - Remind your kids to never enter a strange home or car. Tell your children to report any suspicious activity or behavior, and stay alert.
Check the Candy - Before letting your kids chow down, have a thorough look of their haul. Only unopened, factory-made candy is safe.
Arm Your Security System – Simply put, arm your security system. Burglars can use the increased activity on Halloween night to their advantage. Too often, burglaries are successful because homeowners neglect to arm their home security system.
“FrontPoint Security is dedicated to offering a smart wireless home security system that keeps families secure 24/7,” said FrontPoint Co-Founder and Senior Advisor Peter Rogers. “Since Halloween is a night-time activity, with an appeal to pranksters or others with even more wicked intentions, it makes sense to put safety first. Simply setting a few safety guidelines and arming themselves with the right knowledge, families can help minimize any surprises.”
