Former U.S. Army Captain William Swenson, the United States’ most recent Medal of Honor recipient, will visit The John Marshall Law School Friday, Oct. 25.

Captain Swenson will speak with students about leadership and will tour the school’s Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic, which provides free legal services to veterans.

“We are honored to host Captain Swenson,” Dean John E. Corkery said. “Our students have a tremendous opportunity to learn about leadership and bravery from one of our nation’s distinguished heroes.”

Captain Swenson is the sixth living person to receive the medal from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. He was awarded the honor Oct. 15 by President Barack Obama for demonstrating bravery in a deadly battle in September 2009 in Afghanistan.

The USO of Illinois and the Union League Club of Chicago are sponsoring Captain Swenson’s visit to Chicago.

As part of his brief trip to Chicago, Captain Swenson will tour John Marshall’s veterans legal clinic, where students – including former servicemembers – assist veterans navigating the VA benefits appeals process.

Among the dignitaries who will be attending Captain Swenson’s visit will be fellow veteran U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL). Duckworth, former assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs as well as former director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, also will meet with students and tour the clinic.
