The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt, one of the leading universities in the UK for business and industry, needed an enterprise solution that could be centrally controlled and managed

The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University has streamlined institutional information management and improved endpoint security with the installation of Lumension® Endpoint Management and Security Suite, L.E.M.S.S.

With over 500 endpoints and a mixed environment of Windows, Linux and Mac, the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt, one of the leading universities in the UK for business and industry, needed an enterprise solution that could be centrally controlled and managed. The Institute attracts graduate students from all over the world and works closely with major oil exploration and production multinationals who are eager to tap into their talented pool of engineers. The institute generates research data and is provided with data by their business partners, all of whom are naturally concerned about tracking and securing it at all times.

“We started with Lumension Device Control, and then upgraded to L.E.M.S.S,” said Dr. Ian Chisholm, director of computing at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt. “We found it to be much faster than other agents, and the management and reporting was much easier since it was all controlled in one place.”

L.E.M.S.S. unifies the functions of IT operations and security through a single console, server and agent architecture to seamlessly and more effectively address IT risk and systems management requirements across the enterprise. L.E.M.S.S. delivers best-in-class, modularly licensed capabilities across patch management, anti-virus, configuration management, power management, application control, device control and asset management.

“Being able to control such a variety of endpoint security aspects from Lumension’s single management console is a huge savings in time and effort,” said Chisholm. “From there I can quickly target remediation efforts and the reporting within Lumension keeps me better informed.”

“Layered technology that improves both productivity and security are clearly a win-win,” said Alan Bentley, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Lumension. “We are very proud to work with Heriot-Watt; helping them improve security and realize cost savings is a goal we have for all of our customers.”
