The Telegraph has reported on October 21 in the article ‘Bookmaker Robber Jailed after Bungling Raid Caught on CCTV’ that an alleged attempted raid at a bookmakers in Birmingham was caught on CCTV cameras. The Telegraph reports that the CCTV shows an individual threatening members of staff at the Birmingham bookmakers with garden shears and attempting to break a pane of glass using a chair and a brick. After attempting to take a number of pound coins from the counter, the individual reportedly ran from the premises. The incident, which occurred on April 4, led to a number of passers-by to call the police.
The Telegraph reports that the individual was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the attempted raid and for his role in a previous bank raid in 2012.
The experts at AlertSystems regularly follow industry news relating to business security systems and were interested in this recent story. A spokesperson for the company offered their thoughts:
“A raid can be a frightening experience for members of staff, regardless if the individual involved is successful in their attempts. This is why it’s imperative to have sufficient security measures in place to protect members of staff and members of the public. The presence of a CCTV security system can not only reassure individuals on the premises but, in the case of an incident, police can use the footage as part of their investigations. This information can provide valuable evidence to police and help bring their investigations to a successful conclusion.”
