LED online store specialists Visible Lighting react to the news that German hospital Charité in Berlin has begun using LED lighting as a type of therapy to sooth and calm their patients who are suffering from a critically ill condition.

Visiting hospitals in the past you could often be met with a daunting and clinically cold environment. But psychiatrists have theorised that such environments weren’t conducive to a swift recovery and never being a company to miss a trick; Phillips partnered with GRAFT architects have introduced a range of clever LED lighting systems that have the capacity to light a “sky-panel” above a patients bed.

According to an article in Gizmodo on the 25th of October 2013, called How LED Lighting Is Being Used To Comfort Patients In Intensive Care, the lighting system is said to use over 15,000 LEDs spanning the ceiling and wall in front of the patient’s bed, so that it is visible to the edge of their periphery. The lights are geared to the specific parameters of a patient’s bed, offering them a range of dynamic and mood lighting that’s customised.

The hospital has already introduced two rooms that use the system and Doctors claim that the natural dynamics of the light are positive and that it can actually prevent patients from dropping into a shock when under stress.

A representative from Visible Lighting commented on the news by saying “we always knew that LED lighting makes us feel good, but we’re grateful that it has the power to help those that need it feel better. Studies have been done on coloured light and the effects that they have on humans and our mood, all the signs have pointed towards high responsiveness in a change of mood regarding light – a soothing blue and green mood display on one of these sky panels is bound to be an engaging and calming influence on a patient that is going through a stressful time.

“We’re sure that the future will see this technology installed into homes to help people relax and meditate – after a hard day of work, who wouldn’t want to clear their mind?”
