UNC Program Develops Cross-Cultural Savvy for Global Business Success

A new certificate program will help business people develop cross-cultural communication skills.


To help business people develop the cross-cultural communication skills required for global success, the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School is offering a new certificate program.

“Cross-Cultural Savvy for Global Business – A Certificate Program” will be offered Jan. 31-Feb.1, 2014, by the Global Business Center (GBC) at UNC Kenan-Flagler in Chapel Hill.

“Effectively communicating across cultures is critical to achieving business goals,” said Julia Kruse, GBC executive director. “This program will appeal to business professionals and MBA students who have experience working in an international context and want to further develop their intercultural competencies.”

Seven experts in intercultural communication for business will lead the intensive two-day workshop, said Gina Difino, program leader. “They will use a multi-faceted approach to help participants assess and develop their skills.”

Highlights of “Cross-Cultural Savvy for Global Business” include:

  •     Participants will learn about their communication styles and preferences and apply them to practical real-world scenarios to predict challenges and problem-solve pitfalls.
  •     Country specialists will identify how shared cultural values in Brazil, China and India define structures and interactions in any business setting and assist participants identify successful ways to maneuver across cultures.
  •     Intercultural experts will provide one-on-one consultations and in-depth feedback to all participants about their personal intercultural development, communication styles and how to enhance their effectiveness at communicating across cultures.
