HealthMEDX, the leading LTPAC EMR, has licensed from Florida Atlantic University the right to incorporate the INTERACT™ Tools into the HealthMEDX Vision solution. INTERACT™ is a quality improvement system that is designed to improve the early identification, assessment, documentation, and communication about changes in the health status of residents in skilled nursing facilities.

HealthMEDX, the leading LTPAC EMR, announced today at the LeadingAge 2013 Annual Meeting and Expo that HealthMEDX has licensed from Florida Atlantic University the right to incorporate the INTERACT™ Tools into the HealthMEDX Vision solution. INTERACT™ is a quality improvement system that is designed to improve the early identification, assessment, documentation, and communication about changes in the health status of residents in skilled nursing facilities. By incorporating INTERACT™ into the HealthMEDX Vision solution, HealthMEDX potentially reduces the frequency of potentially avoidable transfers to the acute hospital setting, which could result in numerous complications for the patient and waste billions of dollars due to unnecessary health care expenditures.

INTERACT™ provides a set of clinical tools, educational tools and care paths for several of the most common medical illnesses responsible for hospital admissions in elderly patients, including conditions like dehydration, fever, changes in mental status, congestive heart failure, lower respiratory infections and urinary tract infections.

INTERACT™ is a recognized strategy to address the chronic problem of unnecessary readmissions in LTPAC patients. By embedding the INTERACT™ tools directly into the HealthMEDX platform, HealthMEDX customers can focus on improving clinical outcomes while controlling costs.

“HealthMEDX has incorporated the INTERACT™ licensed tools into our core nursing workflow, making it simple and easy to use. As a by-product of completing the INTERACT™ Resident Transfer Form, HealthMEDX auto-generates the Continuity of Care Document (CCD) and then delivers the CCD to the hospital or care setting that the patient is being transferred to,” stated Gerry McCarthy, Chief Strategy Officer of HealthMEDX.

By licensing the INTERACT tools HealthMEDX has enhanced an already robust clinical module and continues to innovate to provide the most clinically comprehensive LTPAC EMR available while utilizing industry standards to interoperate and exchange data with LTPAC referral partners.

About Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) officially opened its doors in 1964 as the fifth public university in Florida. Today, the University serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students on seven campuses and sites. FAU’s world-class teaching and research faculty serves students through 10 colleges including the recently established Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. FAU is ranked as a High Research Activity institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The INTERACT™ Quality Improvement program was created by Dr. Joseph Ouslander, Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Geriatric Programs, Interim Chair, Department of Integrated Medical Sciences in the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

The INTERACT quality improvement system was initially implemented at 25 community-based nursing homes in Florida, Massachusetts and New York over a six-month period and was documented to produce a 17 percent reduction in hospital admissions among residents. Using INTERACT in nursing homes nationwide has the potential of improving care, reducing complications from hospitalizations, and potentially avoiding millions of dollars in Medicare expenditures annually.
