Server-side risk is a great concern for companies of all sizes, according to a new survey sponsored by Lumension®. The top 3 most concerning risks identified by organizations that experienced a breach in the last 12 months were malware, misconfigurations and targeted attacks. This group is the minority however, with just 17% of respondents reporting a breach in the last 12 months.

“So what about the 83% of the respondents who said they had not been breached in the last year or they were unsure? Given what we know about the stealthy nature of APTs, it isn’t entirely surprising,” said Chris Merritt, director, solution marketing, Lumension. “The 2013 Malware Report by Mandiant said it takes organizations an average of 243 days to discover malware in their systems and 63% said they were notified of the breach by an external source.”

For those organizations that experienced a breach, the identified attack sources varied, including: DOS (17%), malware (15%), web-server attacks (15%) and others. To mitigate these risks, the top 3 technology techniques employed were network restrictions, monitoring and vulnerability management.

“One piece of good news we uncovered was 58% of companies said they have user education programs, although the numbers were higher among larger organizations. Unfortunately, smaller companies use awareness programs less and that makes them more vulnerable to mistakes made by end users,” Merritt said.

The server-side risk survey of SC Magazine readers was written up in an eBook, APTs: Server Watch and is also the topic of a webinar, APTs: The State of Server-Side Risk and Steps to Minimize Risk by Lumension.
