Study reveals low number of managers value social media skills when hiring new employees.

Employees want to share their day-to-day experience and sing the praises of their work

A September study conducted by Fast Company and American Express revealed only seven percent of managers ranked social media skills as most important when evaluating an employee's performance.

“Seeing such low numbers shows that companies don't see a marketing opportunity among their staff,” said Jeremy Durant, business principal of San Diego marketing firm Bop Design. “Encouraging employees to engage on behalf of the brand has its benefits, such as lending an authentic voice and face to the digital conversation.”

Durant continues with tips on how B2B businesses can start empowering employees with social media:

1) Set clear guidelines on content so the company adheres to HR and legal departments, while still giving the individual a unique voice. Creating a social media rulebook is useful for current employees to reference and as new employee training.

2) Provide thoughtful feedback and content suggestions - don’t simply throw the responsibility all on the employee whose profile you’re utilizing. Open up the lines of communication throughout the office so other employees can suggest ideas and play a role.

3) Update employee profile visuals to ensure company logos, contact info, and branding are prevalent and correct. “Having a professionally branded Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook page brings individuals back to the company during a conversation,” said Durant.

4) Think of social media not simply as a messaging tool, but also for sales, networking, customer service, and talent recruitment. “Employees want to share their day-to-day experience and sing the praises of their work,” said Durant.

“Many managers see social media as a distraction in the office,” said Durant. “Yet we’re becoming an increasingly social society. Shutting employees off from being social is shutting your company off from future internal and external growth.”
